Die meisten Fahrer lassen ihren Dämpfer so wie wir ihn liefern 1 : mit maximalen Federweg. Dabei fährt sich weniger Federweg manchmal besser. Sind die Felsbrocken klein, die Stufen flach und die Touren lang, so kann man am Helius AM den Dämpfer an der hinteren Aufnahme ein Loch tiefer setzen 2 . Das reduziert den Federweg um etwa zwölf Millimeter. Das Bike arbeitet dann effektiver, der Fahrer spart Kraft. Ähnlich ist es beim Ion. Montiert man den Dämpfer in der oberen Bohrung des Umlenkhebels, so reduziert das den Federweg von 230 auf 200 Millimeter. Die meisten Rennfahrer schwören, dass sie so schneller sind. Was bewirkt die Einhängung des Dämpfers in eine höhere oder tiefere Position? Beim Mehrgelenker mit Umlenkhebel am Oberrohr (alle Helius Modelle und Nucleon AM) bedeutet die höhere Position mehr Federweg. Die tiefere Position bedeutet weniger Federweg. Beim Mehrgelenker mit Umlenkhebel am Unterrohr (Nucleon E2, ION20, ION14, ION18) bedeutet die höhere Position weniger Federweg. Die tiefere Position bedeutet mehr Federweg. Adjustable travel Most Nicolai models have adjustable travel settings but the feedback that we get from Nicolai riders has shown us that most customers just ride their frame the way it is delivered: factory-set at the max travel 1 . However, sometimes less is more, so here is something to try. On the Helius AM for example: when you mount the shock one hole lower 2 on the rocker link then the rear travel is reduced by about 12 mm. On smoother trails this will make the bike easier to ride saving you energy and making the bike more efficient on long rides and day trips. Then take a look at the ION20: the factory setting with the shock mounted to the top hole of the rocker link provides 230 mm of travel. When the shock is mounted in the next hole down then the travel is reduced to 200 mm. Most racers actually ride the ION20 in the 200 mm setup and they swear that it is faster that way. Running with less travel has the added benefit of reducing the stroke- to-travel ratio which leads to better, and more direct, damping performance.
