Somehow I have a soft spot for single speed bikes. I‘ve been nothing else other than fixed gear for many years now. I like the purist way and as I like to put it in my own words: „Things can’t break when they’re not there.“ My most recent project has driven the whole thing further still . The goal is a single speeder with road racing genes. Light, uncompromising, and fixed. My choice? Of course, an Argon Road frame, which is Gates Carbondrive compatible and the frame can be tailor made as well. An ideal platform for my requirements. For the rest of the components I chose a lot of carbon: Handlebar, seatpost, saddle and fork all made of carbon fiber. The Gates Carbondrive pushes down the weight below 8 kg, despite the heavy high-profile rims. The gear ratio of 55:20 teeth with a cadence of 125 rev / min puts out a leisure speed of 40 km/h. My first ride left a satisfied grin across my face. Thanks to the super rigid frame and the Gates Carbondrive you feel every watt of pedal power getting converted directly into acceleration. Furthermore, the absolute silence is thrilling. No chain chatter, no switching noise. The only thing that penetrates your ears while riding is the wind and the tire noise. But in spite of all this purism I will probably still install a brake on the front wheel. A rapid deceleration from 40 km / h is otherwise nearly impossible.
