The first Nicolai gear box bikes were used exclusively in downhill but gradually the technology filtered through into a broader range of disciplines. Some say, history has a habit of repeating itself and it sure seems that way as the latest Nicolai goes back to the roots, a genuine downhill bike. Kicking the process off, our team riders and the development team drew up a list of requirements. We wanted to integrate the new technology as comprehensibly as possible; as always we were ambitious in our endeavours. Such challenges are exactly why we work as engineers in the bike industry, working hand in hand with elite riders to push the limits of the latest technology available. We decided to use a gear box from the French manufacturer Effigear in combination with 27.5” wheels and make it Gates Carbon Drive compatible. In short, a bike with a low center of gravity, great rolling wheels, a low maintenance and, for now, UCI compliant. What could be easier? As the basis for this bike we utilized the newly developed 2014 ION 20. We stayed true to the ION 20 series geometry with its tried and tested tubing and kept roughly the same damper position.
