ARGON GX GPI

One bike, endless possibilities

As a gravel bike, the Argon GX GPI covers a wide area from road cycling to touring, trekking and bikepacking as well as off-road and thus covers a particularly wide range of possible uses. In addition to various design and construction details, a modular design concept with numerous equipment options also contributes to this. You can therefore determine the main focus and characteristics of your personal Argon GX GPI according to your wishes and preferences. The Argon GX GPI offers almost the same sporting potential as the basic gravel model Argon GX with derailleur drivetrain. Everything that is technically possible with the Gravel Argon GX is also possible with the Argon GX GPI. The additional weight is only about half a kilogram. In return, the electronically controlled Pinion C1.12i transmission in combination with the Gates Carbon Drive offers an incomparable shifting and riding experience with precise gear changes in fractions of a second - whether when stationary or under load. Impervious to dirt, weather and damage, maximally reliable and virtually maintenance-free, the innovative drive extends the range of use of the Argon GX GPI by a significant margin.

Pinion C1.12i Smart.Shift

Gear change within a fraction of a second, even under load

An electronically controlled Pinion C1.12i gearbox takes care of the shifting on the Argon GX GPI. It provides 12 evenly spaced gears with steps of 17.7% and a total gear ratio of 600%. The Pinion technology is based on a spur gear with two sequentially shifted partial gears. Power is always transmitted via two pairs of gears in each selected gear. The result is consistently high efficiency with minimal noise and a direct, loss-free riding experience. All gears can be shifted individually in sequence or in any number of gear steps, whether stationary or on the move. In addition to outstanding function and comfortable operation, the Pinion gearbox also scores in terms of its resistance to dirt and damage, its durability and minimal service requirements. The combination with a Gates Carbon Drive belt drive reduces maintenance and care requirements even further.

Gates Carbon Drive

Carbon fibre reinforced, maintenance-free drive belt

Instead of a chain drive, the Argon GX GPI uses the Gates Carbon Drive. This carbon fiber reinforced drive belt transmits power to the rear wheel efficiently, quietly and play-free, without stretching. A center track on the belt prevents it from coming off. Unlike conventional chains, the Gates Carbon Drive requires neither lubrication nor special care. Dirt and mud can simply be rinsed off with water. As the Carbon Drive works dry and without lubricants, there is also no risk of getting your clothes dirty when using the Argon GX GPI for commuting or everyday riding.

SLIDE DROPOUTS

The Gates Carbon Drive drive belt is tensioned by so-called slide dropouts, which are guided on both sides in horizontal grooves on the inside of the rear end. The Argon GX GPI uses a 142 x 12 mm thru-axle rear hub. A flat mount disc brake mount is integrated into the left dropout. This means that the brake calliper does not need to be readjusted when the dropouts are repositioned.

8.0 SPEC

performance first

Our 8.0 specification stands for a high-quality, optimally balanced mix of components, in which performance, maximum reliability and durability were given equal weight. The electronically shifted Pinion C1.12i 12-speed gearbox transmits the power to the rear wheel via a Gates Carbon Drive belt, which, like the pulleys, comes from Gates' highest component group, the CDX series. Gear changes are initiated via the right-hand TRP Hywire brake-shifter, a system specially developed by TRP for Pinion Smart.Shift. Accordingly, the Argon GX GPI uses the matching TRP Hywire flatmount brake calipers with 160 mm rotors front and rear. The Ritchey Comp Venturemax gravel handlebars offer a variety of grip positions and optimum control in all conceivable riding situations. The handlebar width of 400 to 440 mm grows with the frame sizes, but can also be freely selected on request.

Frame design and geometry

The geometry of the Argon GX combines a wide range of sportiness and efficiency with control and handling. The recipe here is a relatively long top tube and reach for efficiency and speed in combination with a slack head angle and a longer rear end for smoothness and riding stability on unpaved routes and trails. The frame is also compatible with gravel suspension forks with up to 40 mm travel. The frame of the Argon GX GPI is designed to be particularly torsion-resistant, which means that pedal power is converted into propulsion very directly and efficiently. 142 x 12 mm thru-axle dropouts further reinforce the frame construction. On some gravel bikes, flexible rear stays are installed or elastomers are glued into the frame to increase comfort. We deliberately chose not to include such features on the Argon GX GPI, as the durability of the frame and an efficient drivetrain have priority for us. For a more comfortable ride, we primarily go for wide tires, for which the rear of the Argon GX GPI with its wide hollow-milled yokes offers plenty of space. A rather short seat tube in relation to the frame size allows for a longer seatpost extension, which also increases comfort thanks to more flex.

Tire clearance

Tires are an important factor, not only for comfort through their suspension and self-damping effects, but especially for the off-road capability of a gravel bike. The wider the tires, the lower the air pressure that can be run without risking a puncture. This ensures a larger contact patch of the tire on the ground and therefore more grip, traction and safety. The Argon GX GPI can accommodate tires up to a width of 45 mm for 28 inch wheels or 50 mm for 27.5 inch wheels.

Hollow Milled Technology

Hollow Milled Technology is a design and manufacturing process that we use to build high-load volumetric parts such as the seat and chainstay yokes of the Argon GX GPI. Hollow Milled components ensure maximum material and weight savings without weakening the construction. The stress zones in the material are determined by computer simulation right from the construction and design phase. Highly stressed areas can then be reinforced, while material can be saved in areas subject to low stress. This method is called topology optimization. The use of state-of-the-art 5-axis milling machines allows us to manufacture highly complex, hollow milled frame components from a single piece and to transfer the optimized design with the highest level of detail.

Adventure Bike Packing

Multi-day bike tours through remote landscapes are all the rage, with more and more cyclists looking for a speedy, lightweight gravel bike rather than a classic touring bike to experience their adventures. The Argon GX GPI has all the mounts you need to fit mudguards and luggage racks. However, we have concealed these mounts so discreetly that the look of a thoroughbred gravel bike is not compromised. The threads for mudguards at the drop-outs and on the inside of the yokes are only visible at second glance. For mounting a heavy-duty rear rack, we offer an adapter that is inserted into the cut-out of the seat stay yoke and bolted through two bores on the underside. The Argon GX GPI has 2 bottle cage mounts in all frame sizes. Thanks to its straight-cut diamond shape, the front frame is ideal for an additional pannier.

6 frame sizes -adaptive geometry

XS - XXL

As with our other models, the Argon GX GPI features an adaptive geometry that takes the weights and proportions of different body sizes into account. With the length and height of the frame increasing, the seat angle becomes slacker, while the head angle becomes steeper. This ensures that the bike's characteristics remain consistent across all sizes. The Argon GX is available in six frame sizes, from XS to XXL, suitable for riders from 155 cm to 208 cm tall.

7020 Aluminum

Sustainable and enduring

All our frames are manufactured from 7020-T6 aircraft grade aluminum, because we are convinced that this alloy is the superior material in the construction of mountain bikes. Compared to the 6061-T6 (AlMg1SiCu) alloy commonly used in bicycle construction, 7020-T6 (AlZn4.5Mg1) has about 30% higher tensile strength and about 20% higher elastic limit. The widespread use of 6061-T6 aluminum in frame construction is due in part to the fact that it can be processed at lower tooling costs and frames can be straightened after welding with less technical effort. Our frames are engineered and designed so that when overloaded, deformation occurs in a defined area of the frame rather than breakage, significantly reducing the risk of serious accidents and injuries. A NICOLAI aluminum frame is designed to withstand many years even under tough competition conditions.

NICOLAI Welding Technology

Craftsmanship and engineering in perfection

We weld our frames by hand using the TIG process. Our welders are specially trained for this and have many years of experience. For each model and frame size, a precise welding fixture is built, called a frame jig. In it, the CNC-cut tube sets are precisely assembled and fixated with all turned and milled parts of a frame that are to be welded. The frame components are first tacked with single spot welds at precisely specified points in a defined sequence and then, to minimize distortion and stresses, welded in several passes.

Extra Love

powder coating and anodizing colors, decals, customizing, individualization

Thanks to a wide range of colors, every NICOLAI frame can be customized as desired. In our factory's powder coating facility, we process more than 50 colors, each of which can be applied in a high-gloss or satin finish. A separate color is possible for each welded frame component. Frames and frame components can also be anodized as an option, with a choice of black, bronze or titanium. An extended range of anodized colors is available for turned or milled applications such as bell cranks, bearing caps or cable clips, allowing color matching with common components, for example. We also offers an uncoated aluminum finish as "factory raw". If you then add the range of decals colors, the number of design options is almost limitless and a unique, personalized custom bike is guaranteed.

Warranty and spare parts supply

NICOLAI grants a 5-year warranty on all frame models against breakage and material failure, even in racing use or when jumping. The premise is that the respective models are used within the scope of their designated purpose and are equipped only with the components for which there is an approval. In addition, the manufacturer guarantees a spare parts supply for all models for a period of at least 10 years. Since NICOLAI manufactures all components of its frames itself and on its own machines, in individual cases a subsequent production of spare parts is even possible beyond the period of 10 years.

BIKEBOX

We have developed an elaborate reusable bike box for our mail-order shipping. In it, the new NICOLAI bike arrives protected in a wooden frame and guaranteed safe at the customer and is ready for use after a few simple steps. The same box is reused when the bike is returned to us for repair or service. All shipping protections of the bike box such as pads, lashing straps, brackets and screw connections are also reusable.
